can't get mail on my computer it says needs permission to sync

Hi there. As we all know, technology is continuing to change and improve. While the connection you have been using may still work and was once the best, a better, more secure option is available. Basic auth is an older authentication method. A more secure authentication method called OAuth2 is now available. To ensure your account remains secure, we are requiring all applications to support OAuth2.
We recommend using the AOL Mail website and AOL email app so we can ensure you’re always using the most secure sign-in technology when accessing your email.
If you prefer to continue accessing your AOL email on your current third-party email application, including the default email application on your mobile phone, please see details below on how to ensure it’s syncing with the latest secure sign-in method: https://help.aol.com/articles/allow-apps-that-use-less-secure-sign-in
Thank you!

Unable to receive email using Outlook 2007 anymore... No config changes were made and all have been verified... Password was changed to verify it was not an authentication issue... I can send just fine, only cannot receive... Port assignments verified and confirmed from your web help page... Appears to be a SMTP issue...

I have the same problem retrieving my verizon.net mail from my gmail.com account. The attempt to fetch mail always fails with the error "Authentication error.
Server returned error "[SYS/TEMP] Server error - Please try again later."" There was no change in the username, password or authentication method.
When I attempted to use the Application Specific Password I had generated it was rejected with the message "pop.verizon.net does not support leaving messages on the server" although the option to leave the messages on the server was unchecked.
The option to forward the verizon mail to my gmail account is not acceptable because the messages are left in the AOL server, while fetching allows me to delete them.
This is totally unacceptable. -

I have been unable to access my verizon.net emails since 7/12/21. All of my settings are correct. I am continuously receiving a popup asking for my network password. Any suggestions on how to overcome this without deleting my account? I can access it through aol.com but cannot access it through Outlook anymore.

Agree, I find it hard to believe the outage is an accident. I can access my email via the aol web portal (which has ads!!) but not via my email client on my phone or Outlook on my PC. Fix it or own up the the fact that you are choosing to shut out verizon, net domain emails!

I've had this same problem since July 12th and after pulling out much hair, I finally solved the problem. I currently use Thunderbird email client on my desktop and the mail app on my iPhone. You need to log into each of your aol / verizon mail accounts you have, go to PROFILE, then SECURITY SETTINGS, then you need to use the password generator to create a password for your incoming server and your outgoing server. I have 5 accounts accessed from 2 devices and so I needed to generate a total of 20 passwords to copy and paste into the server settings for each account. The AOL help/explanation does a terrible job of explaining this. In summary, your regular email password is for logging in directly on their app or website but to use any other email clients, you must use their password generator to create separate passwords for the incoming POP/IMAP server and the outgoing SMTP server.

thank you chrisharwell, that resolved my issue. Same problem you were seeing, it starting on July 12th, which is my b-day, so i thought it was related. Just generated a new password and the emails are flowing to the outlook client. appreciate the insight.

I have this problem too. I have 5 verizon.net accounts I use for different purposes and on July 9th they all stopped downloading to my iphone and to my Thunderbird client on my desktop. A few days later two of them resumed working and the other three still give the authentication/server error when trying to contact the POP server. I have also experienced long delays in logging on through their website, indicating that this is a server issue on their side. I read AOL's "workaround" and tried setting up my account on a fresh computer and still got the same error, so therefore the changing password / delete recreate account workaround doesn't work and is not the issue. This phenomenon has occasionally happened in the past but was usually resolved in 24 hours. This is clearly an issue with AOL/Verizon's servers and the IMAP/POP interface. I wish they would fix it. I too am taking this as a sign that it is time to leave these ad-bloat click-bait privacy-invading providers and move to another platform. As soon as Protonmail makes POP3 available, I'm gone.

I have the same issue outlook not working since July 12, 2021, but yet it works fine on my Samsung Phone using their email app not the AOL app. They have something messed up with Outlook.
To fix: You have to setup an app password for outlook. https://www.datarepairtools.com/blog/configure-aol-mails-to-outlook/
Just did it and downloading all my emails from the past week.

SInce 7/12/21 Thunderbird has stopped working. Can still access via AOL page, but prefer to use Thunderbird.
The message I get is, "Sending of password for user emailaddress did not succeed. Mail server pop.verizon.net responded: [SYS/TEMP] Server error - Please try again later."
The password obviously works because I can log into AOL.
Changing the password did not change the situation.

Both Outlook and Android stopped being able to connect on July 12. Please fix the e-mail server.

I did the work around suggested by Donald Johnson and it worked just fine. I generated a new password, logged in with it then changed to another password. I did not see an option to not remember the password. I can only assume they want all passwords remembered so that it is easier to hack and compromise the e-mail accounts as well as making all the e-mail accounts accessable to any dishonest government agency to violate and remove our privacy.

30 minutes to get to a live person, young girl, non American, broken English. She kept asking the same questions over and over again, totally useless. After her asking me four times what my name was, what my e-mail account was, what I was using to access the e-mail account with I just hung up in frustration. What a POS AOL has become.

Yup, same here, AOl sucks for sure. **** poor help from a dot-head that does not understand English. All worked well until 7-13-21 and one verizon.net account will not let me log in with the same issues as others have posted. My other verizon.net account continues to work fine. So far just now is 20 minutes listening to music

WORKAROUND FOR THIS PROBLEM IS AT THE END OF MY COMMENTS
I think it's not just IMAP. I use POP. Yup same problem but for me but the last mail sync was on July 8th. I noticed on July 9th that I couldn't get my AOL email from ONE of my AOL email accounts. My other AOL email account still works fine.
My email settings already match this this AOL help article. https://help.aol.com/articles/how-do-i-use-other-email-applications-to-send-and-receive-my-aol-mail
and this one:
https://help.aol.com/articles/how-do-i-set-up-other-email-applications-to-send-and-receive-my-verizon-net-mailThe solution support provided isn't very satisfactory for those of us that like to type in our passwords at each login so we never forget them. Support also says they are supposed to send out an email before they do this to your account. I didn't get one.
AOL's solution is to setup what they call "app passwords" for each email client we use on each device. So if you access email using an email client on two different computers you create two different app passwords. One for each computers email client. (A possible other solution is to delete the email account from your email client and set it up again from scratch. I haven't done that yet because I'll lose all of my saved email If I do.) https://help.aol.com/articles/Create-and-manage-app-password
Yahoo did the same thing some years back. Yahoo offers OAUTH as an alternative. AOL doesn't.

As of 7/15/2021, your web pages providing "support" for 3rd party mail apps contain out-of-date POP, SMTP, and IMAP settings (at least for former Verizon customers). Please update them. Folks with problems related to 3rd part mail apps should be directed to clear and easy to follow instructions for logging into the AOL web mail site, finding their account settings, and generating the password they now need to unlock access to their e-mail. You also need to explain what prompted these changes, acknowledge your communication shortcomings, and recommit to being a dependable e-mail service.

The maddening thing is that APOLLO or whoever runs this clown show now could fix this in a heart beat or at the very least, make it was easy to figure out how to fix it if they really wanted to.

I've had the same problem since July 12th, same error message. I believe it is an aol server problem. I don't believe that AOL commits any resources to fix this issue because they can't run adds and marketing through outlook and don't make any income from it. I've, deleted my verizon.net email from outlook and tried to re-add the account to no avail. It is truly frustrating to have to obtain my emails through the web page,,,, Just my two cents. Sorry no answers...I'm not tech savoy so it's just that much more frustrating....

I find the whole process of getting the temporary generated password for Outlook a PITA! I will be switching over to another provider that is compatible with my Outlook. Goodbye AOL.
