can't get mail on my computer it says needs permission to sync
Hi there. As we all know, technology is continuing to change and improve. While the connection you have been using may still work and was once the best, a better, more secure option is available. Basic auth is an older authentication method. A more secure authentication method called OAuth2 is now available. To ensure your account remains secure, we are requiring all applications to support OAuth2.
We recommend using the AOL Mail website and AOL email app so we can ensure you’re always using the most secure sign-in technology when accessing your email.
If you prefer to continue accessing your AOL email on your current third-party email application, including the default email application on your mobile phone, please see details below on how to ensure it’s syncing with the latest secure sign-in method: https://help.aol.com/articles/allow-apps-that-use-less-secure-sign-in

I keep getting an error message that says in essence "password not accepted."

It would be nice if you could alert third-party app users when changes are made that affect the login process. I spent a full day trying to figure out why my email just stopped downloading. I only found a solution, by chance, on some random post — after burning a full day fishing around on the AOL Web site and finding nothing. I seriously felt like I was wandering around in a late 1990's government Web site. Please make me a believer — I really don't want to change email services.

There are two major complaints that one can read recently: (1) you can't access your email through Outlook (or other) and are forced to use webmail instead; and (2) there are tons of adds crowding your email when you open webmail. The two are CLOSELY related: if AOL kicks you out of your Outlook access and you are forced into webmail you are swamped with advertising you would not otherwise see. And since advertising is a major source of income, here is the basic reason why this is happening. In my case (I was transferred years ago from Verizon email) it is nothing short of a breach of contract. Let me ask you this AOL: are you going to publish my comment?

Replacing my PW with the generated App PW did work. It has been working for about 20 hours so far, but I believe it will expire at some point, maybe 24 hours. I suspect this is to get us to log into the web UI, where there is more advertising. For a free product, I get the need to have advertising, but maybe there is a better way to do this? Maybe once a month we have to log in and take a survey and we get sent a certain amount of ads to our inbox that align with our interests? Just a thought...

I've been having this problem since 7/13/21. My OE Classic Pro email program has all of a sudden stopped retrieving my emails from my verizon.net account. Even my smart phone can't seem to download my emails. I keep getting the same response "Authentication failed. You may have entered incorrect username and password" but I know its correct as I can sign on using the same username and password when I go to AOL.com under the verizon.net account. My settings are correct according to your help desk. So what the **** is going on? I use verizon.net with all my correspondence and contact info.

I have been unable to access the verizon email account on ipad, android and PC. I was able to restore connection on the ipad by deleting the account and reinstalling the account. But not on the PC and android phone which are using outlook for email accounts.

I tried Kelvin's suggestion and it worked.

I have been unable to access my email via Outlook and phone since 11 July. I have not changed any of my settings, it just stopped working. It still does not work.

I maintain records of my family emails on my desktop PC in Thunderbird. This is more than a trivial problem. What's happening, and when will it be fixed?

"[SYS/TEMP] Server error - Please try again later." How much later did you have in mind? It's going on 24 hours already.
suggest that you hire support to be able to rectify this issue to receive email from a external email app that is not the AOL app..

I want and need to save emails to MY PC and my PC alone, but only webmail seems to be working lately, what gives???

I have 6 different verizon/AOL email accounts that I access using three mail programs on three devices (Thunderbird on an iMac desktop running iOS 11.4; Apple mail app on an iPad, and Apple mail app on an iPhone, both up-to-date)
Three of those accounts are now producing the following error msg:
"Sending of password for user -----@verizon.net did not succeed. Mail server pop.verizon.net responded: [SYS/TEMP] Server error - Please try again later."
Since nothing has changed on my end and the passwords work just fine when I log into AOL Mail from a web browser, this certainly looks like an AOL problem. It needs fixing, like Right Now.

I read my email via pop (thunderbird) and it has been timing out now for the last 3 days or so. Can you guys fix this? Do I have to move to gmail?

I had the same issue, spent hours resetting account, profile, passwords, all to no avail. Then read your post and Kelvin's suggestion and it worked.
This is total BS. I have to use a password that they set for me to access my email, not a password of my choosing. I think next they will ask for social security number and a signed blank check. What a joke. Time to ditch this useless, incompetent ****.
Tried to get my emails this morning and same thing happening. I guess this means every day I have to get a new password from AOL and supply it to Outlook in order to view my emails. Welcome to AOL's way of doing things. WTF.

So, I had to add another one-time "App Password" for the SMTP side of each email app on each device - kind of a PITA if you ask me, but I hope it keeps working for a while...

Wish AOL wouldn't make any changes to what is working. If it ain't broke, Don't fix it.
