AOL E-Mail Attack Ad From Abner James Hacks my MacBook Pro
This is the text of FEEDBACK which I gave to AOL today, 07 APR 2026:
When I checked SPAM on my tap.h***@verizon.net account today I saw a possible interesting item at the top of the list. It was FROM: Abner James SUBJECT: Ad Maryland: 55+ ....
Clicking on the Subject brought up about 20 tiny warning windows followed by a screen which had about 5 windows purporting to be from Apple Security claiming that "Access to this Mac PC has been temporally suspended." I was to call Apple at +1 (844) 681-5838 for manual verification to unlock the PC.
My M4 Max MacBook Pro 16" running macOS Tahoe 26.4 was locked up. I could not even move the cursor.
I called Apple Care and it informed me that the +1 (844) 681-5838 was not for Apple. I was then able to use ESC to reduce the size of the frozen window, then close that window.
I then tried to remove that problem Ad which was in my AOL SPAM folder and the the same problem occurred. This happened for both ways of trying to delete the Ad.
*** At that point I called AOL and selected Tech Support. ***
The first call to tech support failed after a few minutes of dialog.
The second call was answered by Charlotte ??? and she handled my problem. She passed it to a technician who determined that my tap.h***@verizon.net AOL account had been hacked. She walked me through resetting my password. She said that she'd clear some things too.
I then deleted the 8 or so regular messages in SPAM and after deleting the final one the problem Ad disappeared from SPAM.
At that time we thought that the matter was resolved, so we ended the call.
*** Subsequent log-in to this account & Problem Detection ***
After logging in to this account I checked SPAM and saw that it was empty. I then looked at my INBOX and saw the following as the most recent entry in in INBOX:
Abner James Ad Laurel: New Food Benefit for Seniors
This variant of the same problem "Ad" was still at the top of the list in my INBOX. I'm quite sure that If I try to Open or to Delete this "Ad" I'll enable the same HACK an my MacBook Pro-16 will be frozen again.
*** I've seen that the Subject Field Entry changes to a variety of things all referring to food benefits for Seniors in Maryland and/of Laurel. I live in Laurel, MD.***
I'm using Firefox 149.0.2
A quick SCAN by Trend Micro just completed with 0 Threats found.
I'm running a Full Scan now.
I will not click on that "Ad."
*** Another Call to AOL Tech Support ***
Red had technician check and determined that everything looked fine on my AOL Account.
The AOL Help Personnel had no way to delete the problem add. I was advised to report the problem here.
PLEASE INVESTIGATE THIS THING. PLEASE DELETE IT IF YOU CAN.
I would appreciate Feedback on the resolution.
P.S. I have a screenshot of the frozen page which results from clicking on the add from AOL. I also have a video of the circus which transpires for a few seconds if the add is touched. I can submit them to AOL is requested.
