Established medical and web accessibility statistics:
Visually Induced Motion Sickness (VIMS): Studies show that up to 33% to 59% of the population is sensitive to visual movement on screens that causes symptoms like nausea, eyestrain, headaches, and disorientation.
Migraine & Vestibular Sensitivity: Over 10–15% of adults suffer from migraines or vestibular conditions. For this group, light flicker and peripheral screen movement trigger sudden nausea (reported in up to 80% of vestibular migraine episodes) and severe headaches.
Photosensitivity & Epilepsy: Roughly 1% to 3% of the general population (and 3–5% of individuals with epilepsy) have explicit photosensitivity where flashing content causes severe neurological stress or seizures.
Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG): International web standards (WCAG 2.1 Success Criterion 2.3.1) strictly prohibit web elements from flashing more than 3 times per second because it presents a known health and accessibility barrier to users with sensory and visual conditions.
