I have a couple of troubleshooting steps for you that should resolve this issue:
1. If you’re signed in, tap the Settings icon, tap Manage Accounts, then tap Edit, tap Remove
2. Restart your mobile device
3. Uninstall and reinstall the app with the latest version
4. Lastly, switch the internet connection from WiFi to mobile data
You could also switch to the Unified Inbox view by following the steps in this article: help.aol.com/articles/how-do-i-switch-to-th.., and make sure that all the other email apps that are you using are set up as IMAP.
If the issues persist feel free to contact our support team at aolmailquestions@aol.com.

The app should start loading emails from the point it last synced. Instead it starts with the newest received. So I see the new ones first and then it keeps adding emails between the new ones and the last sync point. I start reading them and think I've seen all my new emails when suddenly more emails appear that are older. For example if I last checked the app 22 hrs ago. I see emails with a 2hr ago time and it looks like the next email was 22hrs ago. It slowly fills the gap but I'm never sure when it's finished loading back to the point I last checked.

When I open the new mail folder, old mail is often displayed. I have to refresh, or open old mail then new mail again. This also sometimes happens when I read/delete an email.

When the app starts, and the inbox is displayed, old emails should not be displayed. Yet they are.

When I open my email it sometimes shows old email right in there the new. I don't want that. if I want to see old email I'll go look in that folder.
