In an article titled, “Amid world crises, ‘grotesque greed’ wins out” by Ishaan Tharoor, August 8, 2022, The Washington Post quoted him as saying, “It is immoral for oil and gas companies to be making record profits from this energy crisis on the backs of the poorest people and communities.”

   Speaking at the House Oversight hearing regarding skyrocketing oil company profits, Raya Salter, Esq., Founder and Executive Director of the Energy Justice Law and Policy Center stated: “We absolutely need to be looking at all of the significant ways that we can address inflation, and looking into where profits have been a windfall.”

   Recent Congressional efforts to limit price gouging with a form of windfall tax, face stubborn obstruction in Congress, with Republicans firmly against imposing such measures.

   Tar-sands also impact precious water supplies. The article states that, “Every gallon of gasoline produced by tar-sands requires roughly three times as much water as is used to extract conventional oil.” And much of that water is polluted by toxic substances harmful to human health and the environment.

   The Canadians for a Sustainable Society website, states that, “global tar-sand reserves contain as much as 167 billion barrels of useable oil, providing the potential for big profits,” however, since tar-sand is expensive to extract, they suggest that consistently “high oil prices help guarantee profits.”

   On the investment side…
   In their article, “Are Oil Sands Profitable,” the Society reports that the average Estimated Return On Investment (EROI) of conventional world oil is “about 17:1,” while the EROIs for tar-sand oil is “as low as 3.5:1… much lower than solar’s 8:1, or wind’s 15:1.”

    I am getting AOL email saying AOL is updating it's mailbox and if I don't do certain things I may lose the email in my mailbox. Is this true, or is it spam? I tried to ask this question in other ways, and I didn't find any. It is hard to find a way to ask questions on AOL.

    That's a common misconception, Rick... But it's not true! (posted for the 5th time, I believe!) The law you're referring to is provided for in Article 26 of the U.N.’s Asylum Procedures Directive (APD). The article “Asylum in the United States,” posted by the American Immigration Council on August 16, 2022, states that the U.N. 1951 Convention and 1967 Protocol both declared that “Asylum is a protection grantable to foreign nationals already in the United States or arriving at the border who meet the international definition of a “refugee.” They define a refugee as “a person who is unable or unwilling to return to his or her home country.” It also pointed out that, “Congress incorporated this definition into U.S. immigration law in the Refugee Act of 1980.” Further, according to the U.N. Human Rights Counsel (UNHRC); "The Convention does not require refugees to claim asylum in the first safe country they reach, or make it illegal if they have passed through another safe country." A perfect example is the fact that a refugee from Bulgaria must pass through as many as seven different countries, yet they can still ask for asylum in England!
