the sound is working fine for me, but i noticed if I uninstalled windows media player legacy the sounds stop, so it must rely on that?
try going to Control Panel (or go to Start > Run > and type in "control"), press programs and features, on the left of the window, press "Turn Windows Features on or off" then in the pop up window check the box that says "Media Features" and press OK. This worked for me and restored the sound
