Well, you're right, John...
I am pretty confident in my logic and research abilities!
Which, in this case, means thinking outside the box of dictionaries… historical or otherwise.
I hope you realize that we’ve been talking about two different words… "sox" (ahem!) and “gender”.
Which, while often considered interchangeable…
with most people believing sox and gender are the same thing… they definitely are not!
To break it down…
A person typically has their sox assigned at birth... usually based on their physicality, which defines a person as either male or female. Although... how is a person labeled who has BOTH male and female attributes? Not to mention there are far more than the traditionally accepted male/female, XX and XY chromosome combinations!
Gender, on the other hand, involves how a person identifies; specifically, within the roles, behaviors, and attributes that society has identified as either male or female. As such, gender identity is a personal, internal perception of oneself, which may or may NOT match the sox a person was assigned at birth.
For some reason, people seem to feel the need and desire to attach labels onto other people…
And while that can be done somewhat accurately with relation to another person’s sox…
It is virtually impossible, without obvious indicators, to identify the gender of another person!
And thus…
It’s completely inappropriate for anyone to even attempt to limit, regulate, or legislate that aspect of anyone’s life!
