4. Stop clearing selected items whe new email is posted forcing user to re-select emails to be deleted or marked "read", for example.

   I get many emails I don't want multiple times a day. So I start going down my inbox selecting those I intend to delete. I can have, say, 10 selected, but before I can press the 'delete' icon, if a new message arrives in my inbox, all the check marks for emails marked for deletion vanish. So I have to go down the list and re-select them.
