Recognize your own email addresses
I recently received an email from another AOL subscriber [diggeology@aol.com]. When I tried to respond to it, I received a "MAILER-DAEMON@aol.com" notice that "552: 1 Requested mail action aborted, mailbox not found"
In case you're wondering [or even care] why people are leaving AOL in droves, here you go.
Please use the report a bug option immediately after receiving this error. This will provide us with some helpful debug logs that we can investigate further with.

As Alex Stephens said, there are sites that change the email address to, for instance abc@aol.com to abcataol.com@site.com. This is normal. What you need to do is NOT click on reply on those sites but instead scroll down and you'll see choices like "reply to group", "reply to sender", etc. Choose reply to sender (if that's your choice) and this won't happen. It's not AOL's fault. It's the sender's fault for not checking the To line before sending the email and not scrolling down to hit reply to at the bottom of the email they are reading

This happens with all mail providers. What causes it is when the sender "spoofs" or forges the reply-to address. In that case, the message appears to come from an address that, in reality, does not exist. When you then attempt to reply, the mail server for the sender's domain (in this case, AOL), replies with a "bounce" message. Response code 552 means "Couldn't find a mailbox for that user.". I hope this helps to explain what happened. It is not specific to any given provider, so it could happen with any service.
